If you had told me years ago that my baby would start walking and then almost immediately running at 9 months old i would have laughed in your face.

Babies begin walking anytime between 8 and 16 months. Some perfectly normal children don t walk until they re 16 or 17 months old. During her first year your baby is busy developing coordination and muscle strength in every part of her body. Learning to walk involves much more than footwork.

Children at this age are pretty. She ll lurch along like frankenstein as she gets used to. While some babies begin walking before 12 months others don t walk until 16 or 17 months. Early walking comes with its advantages and disadvantages and also a few surprises.

Of course it also depends on how you define walking some parents will boast that their baby began walking at 9 months but they re usually talking about the kind of walking a baby does while holding onto something known as cruising. At 10 months your baby s coordination has improved a lot. There s a wide range of normal ages for kids to start walking. Most babies take their first steps sometime between 9 and 12 months and are walking well by the time they re 14 or 15 months old.

Walking is now just a couple of months away so you can expect your baby to soon be on the go even more. But a baby being unable to walk at 14 months isn t usually indicative of a problem. The only thing i knew about when babies take their first steps was the story my parents always told about me which was that i didn t really walk till i was 18 months old. Some kids walk as early as 9 months others as late as 17 months.

If you are home with your little one try incorporating some of the following play activities into your daily routine. My daughter started walking at 10 months old almost skipping the crawling stage which lasted all of four weeks. However your baby will likely take his first steps between 9 and 15 months. Some babies begin walking even later than that.

Remember try not to stress about when your baby is going to walk and maybe cherish those final few months of crawling before life gets very interesting indeed. Every baby reaches the walking milestone at a different time. Playing peek a boo stacking colorful blocks together playing along to your baby s lead like answering the phone or accepting small gifts from them singing interactive songs. Don t worry if your child takes a little longer though.
